Further Information: Why did you get involved in sustainableevent.com?

I worked for almost 10 years in and around the events industry climaxing with the co-production of ‘Ecosystem1.0' two events in the Brizilian Amazon which were organised through the unlikely partnership of the Amazonian Local Government, Greenpeace and a New York record label called Liquid Sky. I became very engaged in the effect an event can have on the community and the environment ever since.

Favourite Book: Barbara Marx Hubbarb - Conscious Evolution

Favourite event: Ecosystem1.0 – Amazon , Brazil , I know it's my own event but I'm allowed to be bias

About me:

Shane Hughes - Introduction – A prolific instigator of projects, campaigns and live events, motivator, organiser of people and coordinator of social ventures across the globe.

At the age of 17 I left the UK to drift the world, encountering many of her mysteries and extremities. After several years and having visited 25 countries, I arrived in Brazil where I lived for 7 years with Karen, who is now my wife. We returned to the UK to start a family in 2001, which now includes our beautiful (frequently naughty) kids Sunny and Lily.

Events organiser – Working with strong ethics and best practices, first started working with other people’s events in the UK, Ibiza and the USA. Arriving in Brazil in 1995, I set up my own events management company instrumental in kick starting the dance scene and taking the leading edge for many years. I’ve worked the complete production spectrum from project development, conceptual creation, fundraising, budgeting, marketing, operations, staffing etc.

Social Enterprises – I’ve been engaged in green issues since childhood and through the years expanded into a web social, of economic and political projects. I co-founded the European Creative Forum, Sustainableevent.com and Be The Peace, As well as gaining extensive experience working with entities like Intermediate Technology Design Group, European Social Forum (London), Friends Of the Earth, United Diversity, Mind, War on Want and RampArt Social Centre among many others.

Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) – in conjunction with the University of East London I completed 2 years at CAT obtaining a Post Grad Diploma – Architecture; Advanced environmental and energy studies (20.000- word draft thesis titled’ A framework for evaluating the social, economic and environmental impacts of large scale special events)

Ecosytem1.0 – I was soon invited back to Brazil to co-produce Ecosystem1.0 – a 4-day festival, located in the heart of the Amazonian forest. It was the largest event of its kind in South America and for all but a handful of the 30,000 Amazonians that attended it was their first ever contact with electronic music.

In our first event, the Amazonian Government funded approximately 1 million pounds in an out of character partnership with Greenpeace, Liquid Sky (a New York record label) and me contracted to be in the middle as the local co-ordinator and producer. Our aim was to produce the most environmentally friendly event that the world had ever seen as a tool for educating youth culture (the forest’s future guardians).

We cleaned a disused quarry for the site, championed local indigenous building techniques and used a multitude of environmental best practices in our production and construction. We united many of the local NGO’s, community groups and organisations supporting indigenous peoples and wildlife, etc. The event was an educational tool, not through lectures but through examples and by connection making it ‘cool’ to care for the environment.

After completing the production of the second of the Ecosystem events I returned to the UK in search of Knowledge, I wanted to better understand the impacts of events and so started my masters at the Centre for Alternative Technology.
